An international PhD student made an application to extend their period of studies. This was their fourth extension request.

The provider rejected the request because although the student had used the process for raising personal circumstances that had impacted on their studies, the student’s request focused on describing further work they needed to carry out. The provider also noted that the student’s request was late, arriving after their registration had expired. And the student owed more than £2,000 in tuition fees.

The student appealed the decision, referring to a family bereavement. The provider rejected the appeal, because the student had not included any information about when the bereavement took place or explained why they had not raised it until now.

The student complained to us. We decided not to uphold the complaint (we decided it was Not Justified). We sympathised with the student’s disappointment that they could not continue to study. However, we were satisfied that the provider had applied its rules fairly. It was reasonable for the provider to take account of the student’s overall academic progress and their outstanding fees in reaching its decision.
